When you first start out playing a game with so many moving parts as League of Legends
there’s a lengthy period of adjustment where you’re just trying to wrap
your head around the basics. Diving into a massive pool of champions,
on a map that’s dotted with objectives, while facing an opposing team
that’s ready to take you down – it’s an intimidating experience. With
time and practise, however, the anxiety fades and you start to
understand the flow of a game.

Interestingly,
it seems two categories stand out: mechanical skill and mental
fortitude. For players such as Derek “zig” Shao, he feels it’s important
that you stick with just a couple of champions so you can focus on
mastering some of the more important aspects of the game. One of those
is farming, which Alex “Xpecial” Chu says should be something you can do
without thinking – it should be second-nature. If you’re looking for a
target to judge yourself on, Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage recommends
aiming for ten CS per minute.
As
for approaching League of Legends with the right mindset, the pros’
advice is to pay attention to your own play rather than finding excuses
in the play of others. Sure, it can be tempting to take out your
frustrations on the decisions or mistakes of team-mates but ultimately
that helps no one. “At the end you don’t have control over other people
and you only have control over yourself. So you should just try to fix
all your mistakes and try to improve and not focus on things you can’t
control,” says Fabian “Febiven” Diepstraten.
